2025-26 Community Scholar in Residence and Community Resident in Action Awardees

We are pleased to announce our recipients of the 2025-26 UNP community-engaged scholarship awards! These are two awards that UNP provides every two years, with each award providing around $12,000 in funding. The Community Scholar in Residence (CSIR) award goes to a faculty member, while the Community Resident in Action (CRIA) award goes to a community resident, or group of residents, working on a community project. Read more about our newest recipients below:

2025-26 Community Scholar in Residence: Dr. Stacy Harwood

Dr. Harwood is a professor in the department of City & Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah. She has been a tremendous partner to UNP, and our network of partners, since 2018. While she has worked on multiple projects, her time as the CSIR will be focused on supporting the West Side Leadership Institute (WLI). Her work will help WLI to better understand the effectiveness of the program, re-engage with WLI alumni, and create an asset map of the people and programs that have emerged over the many years WLI has been serving the community. This will be an incredible resource for all of us on the west side.

Thank you, Dr. Harwood, for your continued collaboration with our community!

2025-26 Community Resident in Action: CEMELLE

CEMELLE is a non-profit organization founded by community members Alex Higuera, Carlos Morales, and Sadie Gomez. Their mission is to eradicate the disparities in incarceration and education that affect latino/a youth by offering education, resources, and community building. In partnership with local school districts and peer courts, they will utilize their time as the CRIA to develop a program that supports students and their families. This program focuses on increasing education pathways, improving emotional regulation, and foster increased community connections for young people.

Thank you CEMELLE for your work in our community!
