EVENTS/CONFERENCES

  • The University of Utah Bennion Center presents the 6th annual, Hunger Banquet, Monday, September 25th, 2006, Union Saltair Room, 6:00-7:30pm, students: $5.00 or 5 cans of food, general public: $8.00 or 8 cans of food. All proceeds will be donated to the Utah Food Bank & Oxfam America. 30,00 people die each day from hunger related causes. Come to the Hunger Banquet to find out why.   • SPEAK Presents Real Recovery: Explorations of Recovery from Eating Disorders, Presented by Cari Morphet, Educational Psychologist, Wednesday, September 27th, Noon, Women's Resource Center, University of Utah Campus Olpin Student Union, Room 293. Eating disorders are serious problems among girls and women, and increasingly, young men. There is a host of information about contributing factors to develop an eating disorder, and a great deal of research that compares various treatments with common indicators for recovery.   • Salt Lake Mayor's Coalition on Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs invites the community to the Religious and Spiritual Leaders Explore Substance Use and Abuse, Thursday, September 28th, 2006, 5:00pm-7:30pm, Salt Lake City Public Library Conference rooms A and B. Participants will learn how faith, faith traditions and faith communities can help in the prevention of substance abuse, as well, as to help those individuals and families already suffering from addiction.   • Weber State University in conjunction with the 16th of the International Association of Hispanic Women's Literature invites the community to two FREE events. Wednesday, October 4th, 7:30pm, Peery's Egyptian Theater, Ogden, Free screening of Mi Vida Sin Mi, directed by Isabel Coixet, & Hispanic Women of Poetry, Monday, October 9th, 2006, 10:00am-11:00am, Ogden High School Auditorium, readings by student poets, local poets and internationally recognized Spanish poet Ana Rossetti. Q&A will follow with light refreshments served.

EMPLOYMENT/TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

  • Colors of Success, Inc. is hiring for a full-time Program Specialist to assist in implementing Steppin' Up, a teen pregnancy prevention program for males and females between the ages of 14 to 18 years old. The program specialist will share responsibility for day to day operations of the project; such as recruitment, community outreach, collaboration, program evaluation and case management. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

  • The Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is now accepting applications for the Utah Hispanic Business Leadership Foundation 2006 Scholarship.   • The International Center at the University of Utah is pleased to announce $20,000 scholarship funds for the Global Diversity Scholarships for study abroad in the 2006-07 academic year. Typical awards will be about $2500 for semester-length program, but could be higher depending on a particular student's financial need and situation. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

  • Help survivors of sexual violence. The Rape Recovery Center needs dedicated and caring advocates. Advocates assist survivors of sexual violence with short and long term recovery needs and educate the community about the realities of sexual assault. Advocates chose which hours they want to work and how many hours a week they would like to help. Advocates will need to complete a 40 hour training and will earn certification with the UCASA (Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault). ON-GOING SERVICES

  • Salt Lake City School District- FREE Summer Lunch & Breakfast Program! FREE summer meals are available to all children ages 18 or younger beginning June 5th, 2006 through August 15th, 2006. No FEE! No registration! FREE Meals must be eaten on site! Various sites located at local Salt Lake City School District Schools and community agencies. Additional sites offered at local parks & community centers in Murray, South Salt Lake, Southeast Salt Lake, Kearns, Magna, Southwest Salt Lake City, Taylorsville, and West Valley City.   • Community Exploration Card- Salt Lake City Public Library offers the community the Community Exploration Card that provides free general admission for up to four people to Red Butte Garden, the Children's Museum of Utah, the Utah Museum of Natural History, and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. A limited number of Community Exploration Cards will be available at the beginning for each month and are good for that month. For more information, contact the City Library at 801-524-8200.
